Smart Turns and a Big Win: Miller and Corazon Earn the Blue in the $5,000 National Derby at the Lexington National Horse Show
Lexington, VA – August 6, 2026 – A field of 28 talented horse and rider combinations walked into the Wiley ring on Friday afternoon looking for a blue ribbon. At the end of the day, it was Patrick Miller and Corazon who topped the $5,000 National Derby at the Festival of Champions’ Lexington National Horse Show, adding another derby victory at a venue that has become a favorite for the accomplished rider. Miller and Corazon rode to first with a combined score of 175.5. Jessica Guildan piloted Rion to second place with a combined score of 171, while Riley Hogan and Touch of Grey claimed third place with a combined score of 169.
Friday’s USHJA National Hunter Derby began with a classic round course involving a long flowing bending line with a high option on the in and out, a two stride across the diagonal, two more long flowing bending lines involving high options, and ending on a single diagonal. Riders who returned to the ring for the handy round faced multiple challenges including numerous opportunities for tidy inside turns, a high options bending to a trot jump, and more long bending lines.
Miller, who rides for Pam Baker, and Corazon, owned by American Heritage Family Farm, have only been partners since the end of the winter circuit, but the pair have already found a winning formula. Friday’s victory marked their second derby win at the Virginia Horse Center, making the result even more special for Miller and the team behind the talented horse. “[Corazon is] the horse that I got to ride, and we got him right at the end of winter circuit this year,” Miller explained. “This is his second derby win, at this venue, actually.”
With a competitive first round followed by a handy round that rewarded both precision and bravery, Miller entered the class with a straightforward strategy. “The first round was just, keep it simple, play it smart,” he said. The handy round, however, gave Miller an opportunity to make a bold move. While walking the course, he noticed a tidy option following the first fence and considered whether it was worth the risk. “I was walking it, I saw the turn, and I looked at Glenn and said, ‘Should I try it?’ And he went, ‘Be smart about it.’ Thankfully, we were smart about it, and it ended up working,” Miller recalled. “So it was fun.” This tidy inside turn helped set Miller and Corazon apart as they navigated the handy course, ultimately earning them the top spot in the $5,000 National Derby.
For Miller, the win also carries the added significance of competing at a venue that has been part of his riding career for years. Having shown at the Virginia Horse Center since he was a junior, he has watched the facility evolve firsthand, and he is impressed with the changes. “I’ve been here since I was a junior, and I love it,” Miller said. “The improvements are next to none. It is an unrecognizable facility now. I absolutely love showing here, so we’ll be here more.” With another derby victory under their belt and a relatively new partnership already making its mark, Miller and Corazon are proving to be a combination worth watching as the Festival of Champions continues.
Derby Day, sponsored by Triple Crown, also featured the $1,000 VHC 2’ Hunter Derby where Sarah Thompson and Galaxy took top honors, followed by Ava Diatelevi and Callisto Z in second, and Madison Bonner and Cadillac in third. Derby day continued with the $1,000 VHC 2’9” Hunter Derby where Katherine Butler Schmidt and Desmond Point rode to first place, Kendall Ball and White Russion in second, and Jessica Mcelhaney and Lancelot rounded out the top three taking home third.
Exhibitors at the Festival of Champions’ Lexington National Horse Show can look forward to an action packed weekend including Saturday’s $25,000 Grand Prix and Hunt Seat Medal Finals, and Sunday’s AYR Equitation Challenge.
